We are a theatre company and acting studio dedicated to providing a transformative space for experienced or aspiring actors whose lives have been impacted by alcohol or drug misuse.
Led by like-minded individuals who are predominantly sober or in recovery themselves, we celebrate sobriety within the performing arts industry and provide actor training and performance opportunities for those wishing to discover, or rediscover, their desire to act.
Proudly presented in collaboration with The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.
CRAVE THEATRE Company and Acting Studio was founded in 2023 with a commitment to promote voices from the sober and recovery community within acting and actor-training. We are proud that our facilitator's and director's shared lived-experience with our actors helps to create a supportive and empathetic working environment.
Inspired by the 'Nothing About Us Without Us' movement within the arts, which demands the mobilisation of marginalised voices within policy and practice, our team; founder, actors, teachers and policy makers are either sober, in recovery from drug or alcohol misuse, or are dedicated to the Recoverist* social movement.
The primary aim for our work is to build together new societal perceptions, perspectives and attitudes towards those who have struggled with alcohol or substance dependency. Through our training and performance strategies we help to scaffold practical tools for our actors, developing self-care, self-awareness and resilience.
Our recovery-engaged acting approach provides a much needed bridge between the emotional challenges of maintaining one's sobriety and the psychological rigours of performing. We are proud that we offer a vital helping hand and supportive 'way back in' for people in recovery who want to reignite their passion for acting.
Our hope is that our work will inspire the sober actors of today and tomorrow, and position recovery from alcohol or drug abuse at the forefront of the acting business.
*Recoverist = Recovery + Activist
By donating towards our work you will be helping those who have experienced the deep pain of substance abuse, addiction and associated mental health issues including self-harm and suicide attempts.
Our actors not only learn how to express themselves again but re-educate themselves about their self-destructive nature and complex relationship with the world.
Through our work our actors learn to self-reflect and self-examine which improves their ability to build emotional resilience and confidence. From this position they are better equipped to re-build their lives and create positive pathways towards new goals.
As a new charity we have extensive start-up and ongoing costs for which we will depend, at this time, on private contributions to begin and broaden the scope of our charitable aims.
You can contribute towards our work by making public or anonymous one-off individual donations. Or you can become part of our community yourself by becoming a Patron.
As a Patron you will receive unique experiences and forge a closer relationship with the creative team.
