We are a theatre company and acting studio that specialises in empowering experienced or aspiring actors whose lives or careers have been impacted by a period of alcohol or drug dependence.
Led by like-minded individuals who are in recovery themselves, we promote and celebrate sobriety within the performing arts industry, and provide actor training and public performance opportunities for those in recovery wishing to rekindle or explore a desire to act.
Proudly presented in collaboration with The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.
Inspired by the 'Nothing About Us Without Us' movement within the arts, which demands the inclusion of marginalised voices in policy and practice, CRAVE THEATRE Company and Acting Studio was founded in 2023 by actors with lived-experience of alcohol or drug abuse.
Our founder, actors, teachers and policy makers are either in recovery from drug or alcohol abuse, or are dedicated to the Recoverist* social movement. We are proud that our facilitator's and director's shared experience with our actors helps to create a supportive and empathetic working environment.
The primary aims for our work are to build together, actors and audience alike, new societal perceptions, perspectives and attitudes towards those who have struggled with alcohol or substance misuse. We build, through performance, practical tools for self-care and personal growth.
Through our recovery-informed acting approach we support recovering performers to navigate possible internal obstacles such as fear, anxiety or feelings of low self-esteem. In doing so we provide a much needed bridge between the challenges of sobriety and the emotional rigours of performing.
Our hope is that our work will inspire the sober actors of today and tomorrow, and position recovery from alcohol or drug abuse at the forefront of the acting business.
*Recoverist = Recovery + Activist
By donating towards our work you will be helping those who have experienced the deep pain of substance abuse, addiction and associated mental health issues including self-harm and suicide attempts.
Our actors not only learn how to express themselves again but re-educate themselves about their self-destructive nature and complex relationship with the world.
Through our work our actors learn to self-reflect and self-examine which improves their ability to build emotional resilience and confidence. From this position they are better equipped to re-build their lives and create positive pathways towards new goals.
As a new charity we have extensive start-up and ongoing costs for which we will depend, at this time, on private contributions to begin and broaden the scope of our charitable aims.
You can contribute towards our work by making public or anonymous one-off individual donations. Or you can become part of our community yourself by becoming a Patron.
As a Patron you will receive unique experiences and forge a closer relationship with the creative team.
